aidenyeh: now it's even lower than that...

mrsdurff 1: @carol - check preferences

Nina Liakos: Freud, Einstein...

Moderator (Vance Stevens): yes

Nergiz Kern: Einstein, Freud

Maryanne Burgos: Einstein

Moderator (Mike Marzio): freud einstein darwin

Moderator (Vance Stevens): don't know the one on the right

Berta: Madam Curie and Einstein

aidenyeh: who's the one on the far right?

Nina Liakos: I thought Darwin had a big beard

carolteach4: Einstein

aidenyeh: lol

Moderator (Mike Marzio): Freud's mom? Anna?

Moderator (Vance Stevens): curie freud enstein

carolteach4: darwin

Moderator (Vance Stevens): madame x

Nergiz Kern: Darwin's was bigger, NIna

Michael Coghlan:

mrsdurff 1: more time for our senior moments?

Nergiz Kern: I'm also wondering who lady on the right is.

aidenyeh: give us a better picture

Maryanne Burgos: Senior moment means you used to know it!

Nina Liakos: I can't even tell the gender

mrsdurff 1: a poet?

Nergiz Kern: Can#t see it well. That's why

teresadeca (Portugal): lol

aidenyeh: lol

Nina Liakos: I see only half a face

Nergiz Kern: Thanks for the hint!

Nina Liakos: Margaret mead?

teresadeca (Portugal): margaret meade?!

Moderator (Vance Stevens): margaret mead?

carolteach4: margaret mead

Moderator (Mike Marzio): Yeah, Meade

teresadeca (Portugal): madam curie

Nina Liakos: I thought far right was Mead

mrsdurff 1: good nina

Moderator (Vance Stevens): thought it was mdm curie

teresadeca (Portugal): me too, nina

Nina Liakos: Not good

Nina Liakos: yes

Moderator (Vance Stevens): easy

Nina Liakos: haha

aidenyeh: lol

Berta: ha ha

Moderator (Vance Stevens): yaaay

Nina Liakos: So who is on the far left?

aidenyeh: curie

teresadeca (Portugal): so who's on the left?

Nina Liakos: Learned what? what they look like?

Nina Liakos: I already know who they are

Nina Liakos: Tere, Marie Curie

carolteach4: Yeahh!

Claire Siskin: Margaret Meade was a famous anthropologist

Nergiz Kern: Thanks, Claire!

mrsdurff 1: 1? only?

kelley Irish: Wow I never text message

Nergiz Kern: Twitter!!!

Nina Liakos: Neither do I--

mrsdurff 1: i have unlimited txts - average 5 per day

kelley Irish: twitter email enough

Nina Liakos: I twitter but rarely

Nergiz Kern: It must be WIAOC now

Nina Liakos: Not safe!

Nergiz Kern: Why Nina??

mrsdurff 2: Hey, I'm Mrs. Durff 2 (ScottM) and I found myself with two twitter windows open on two computers at once this a.m.

Berta: Texting while driving, not good

Nina Liakos: I agree Berta!

carolteach4: texting while driving is ridiculous!

mrsdurff 1: scott stop impersonating me

Nina Liakos: But when you're stuck in traffic you may actually be sitting and not going anywhere

kelley Irish: I love blue tooth-so if i need to get a call I dont have to use my hands

carolteach4: Well, maybe if you are stationary -still, not a good practice

mrsdurff 1: i twitter via Dial2Do when driving

mrsdurff 1: uses voice

Nina Liakos: What's that?

Nina Liakos: oh

Congerjan: First info I had on last week's Calif. earthquake came from twitter

Nina Liakos: Frequently

mrsdurff 2: heheheeeee

kelley Irish: Library

Congerjan: The library

JWagner: library --

Michael Coghlan: we didn't even bother to know

Steve Ransom: We read books and journals

Nina Liakos: Yes, true

Nergiz Kern: We asked the questions but it was more difficult to get answers

mrsdurff 2: we didn't know what to ask

Steve Ransom: Are we reading fewer scholarly journals because of the convenience of immediacy?

carolteach4: I found my way to this unconvergence meeting through Twitter - thanks to durff for the link and tech help

Congerjan: Or how to ask

JWagner: if we wanted to know -- we would find -- but most times we just forgot about it

Nergiz Kern: If the question wsn't "important" enough, you forgot about it.

Nina Liakos: Yes, JWagner, that is true

JWagner: Durff pulled me too

mrsdurff 1:

Congerjan: Thanks Durff... that's how I found you all..

kelley Irish: my administrator will not allow laptops during meetings

kelley Irish: Says we are being rude

mrsdurff 1: sure it wasn't scott? he is pretending to be me

Congerjan: I take notes during meetings on my iPhone

JWagner: kelley -- does your administration feel the same if you doodle??

kelley Irish: nope

Berta: I take notes with my digital camera

Berta: at conferences

Steve Ransom: Do we end up with more information than we really need sometimes?

carolteach4: I was just ordered to remove all student names from our school website

JWagner: Steve -- I often end up with information overload

Berta: I think so Steve

Nergiz Kern: I think stimes we do, Steve.

Berta: Fear of missing something?

Nergiz Kern: Often, the information is not necessary but we are curious anyway

JWagner: sometimes I will sift what I need to remember -- sometimes I just walk away from it all -- sometimes I realize it was just in time knowledge

Nina Liakos: Curiosity is human

Nergiz Kern: Probably also true, Berta.

mrsdurff 2: carolteach4 that's just wrong--goodbye global conversation in the service of paranoia

Nina Liakos: I forget pretty much everything these days LOL

Nergiz Kern: Curiosity is also a time waster sometimes

Steve Ransom: I can spend hours "learning"... it's all interesting, but it can distract me from learning what I actually need. Requires much discipline and ability to filter

Nina Liakos: so there is always room to learn more, or again

Berta: Me too, Nina

kelley Irish: If I am watching tv and can't remember a actor or if it provokes a question I google it

Nergiz Kern: So true, Steve!!

JWagner: I think at times I turn to my network for answers though before I take the time to think it through myself.

mrsdurff 1: where are the cheat sheets?

mrsdurff 1: how do i get on the leader board?

aidenyeh: lol

Berta: lol

kelley Irish: whats the top score

JWagner: are those ??? not the same??

Nergiz Kern: Information/learning can become addictive.

Steve Ransom: So, perhaps, how do we make writing a valuable and desirable experience??

JWagner: pages are the goal??

kelley Irish: Students now expect everythign to be entertaining

Nergiz Kern: no

Nina Liakos: We would like to think pages are not the goal but students perceive assignments in that way (much of the time)

JWagner: I play DAILY

Maryanne Burgos: Too busy!

Steve Ransom: Given the choice of writing or video games, it's a no brainer for most students. It's not that simple, I think

mrsdurff 2: ScottM here, playing TimezAttack, QuestAtlantis, and Scratch with my 4th graders right now

mrsdurff 1: remember virtual worlds are not video games

kelley Irish: my kids love PHUN

carolteach4: My goal for this summer is to learn how to use Scratch - looks like that is what is on screen shot

Steve Ransom: @Durff... true

kelley Irish: I adore Scratch

JWagner: CarolTeach4 -- I can send you my delcious link for Scratch i fyou wish

kelley Irish: I teach scratch to 6th grade and then when they do Alice in 7th they are amazing

Nergiz Kern: There is also Scratch for SL

kelley Irish: Scratch teaches programming basics

mrsdurff 2: I have some vid of 3rd graders sharing scratch first efforts at http://usnlstech.blogspot.com

Steve Ransom: My son loves PHUN!

carolteach4: @JWagner - that would be great

kelley Irish: My students projects are at http://computerkiddoswiki.pbwiki.com

mrsdurff 2: hahaha @"no recollection..."

Steve Ransom: But wait... that's all too simplistic. There needs to be some framework to make learning purposeful sometimes... It's not just about responsiveness and engagement

kelley Irish: try moovl for physics

Nina Liakos: It's too easy to scratch many learning surfaces without ever penetrating a topic to any depth

Steve Ransom: @Nina...nicely put

JWagner: is David still at ThinkQuest??

Nergiz Kern: Agree, Nina.

Nina Liakos: haha

mrsdurff 1:

Nergiz Kern: 2% of cats

kelley Irish: Important to remember that all these things are tools to engage in the process and learning os still the goal

mrsdurff 1: yay cats

Steve Ransom: Okay...the "so what" question has to be asked. 100% of kids play on the playground.

mrsdurff 1: where is runescape classified?

Nina Liakos: I have to admit I think that some kids may just play without learning much

Nina Liakos: Not everybody ius equally curious

carolteach4: My 26 year old son advised me to stay away from Second Life -I get lost there, any way

Nergiz Kern: I learned a lot on the playground

Nergiz Kern: Carol, don't listen to your son.

carolteach4: I'll give it a try again this summer - hopefull with durff as a guide

kelley Irish: It is still our jobs as teach to chose the correct tools monitor progress, and hold students accountable

mrsdurff 1: SL is not to be avoided

JWagner: @Kelley -- YES!!!

Nergiz Kern: His experience might be different from yours

Nina Liakos: I was afraid to try SL but I am now slowly learning to get around there

mrsdurff 1: I wsould hearitly disagree with your son

Nina Liakos: I attended 2 excellent sessions there this morning that would have been off limits to me had I not created an account!

carolteach4: @durff - I thought you would.

mrsdurff 1: gee, what gave it away?

Steve Ransom: @Nergiz - yes...but we learn everywhere. The goal is to make it purposeful, standards-based, and efficient most of the time.

kelley Irish: I have just started to go to SL mostly attending ISTE functions

Nergiz Kern: I agree partly, Steve. But I have a a bit of a problem with "standardized"

carolteach4: Haven't businesses been using virtual environments for training for years and years?

mrsdurff 1: yup

mrsdurff 2: a _lot_ of time lol

Congerjan: I can't get second life to work since I installed parallels on my Mac... any ideas?

mrsdurff 1: mmm, both mrsdurff's agreed on that

Michael Coghlan: This relates to previous session about loss of face - you have to make mistakes to learn/

derrallg: that's scary

mrsdurff 2: What's a Mac?

mrsdurff 1: indeed

mrsdurff 2:

mrsdurff 1:   _

Nergiz Kern: So, agree, Michael. We need a culture that tolerates mistakes

mrsdurff 1: i skipped orientation island

Nina Liakos: LOL

Michael Coghlan: But maybe this is a cultural issue Nergiz?

carolteach4: @durff -How much longer will David be on? I really have to go out to the field; all my 7th graders are out there for field day, and I'd better beat feet.

kelley Irish: just teleport and fly

Steve Ransom: http://tinyurl.com/q4qb5g

mrsdurff 1: i think 20 mins

carolteach4: I assume this will be available in a stream later.

derrallg: that's interesting and still competitive

Nergiz Kern: Maybe to some degree, Michael. But I know different cultures and none really tolerate mistakes all too much

Maryanne Burgos: Is orientation island still accessible?

Berta: "Believe in the role of luck" .... Good for marketing but how about for teaching-learning?

Michael Coghlan: noted Nergiz - will cogitate!

Nergiz Kern: Don't start your SL life on orientation island

JWagner: did they not have more opportunity though to be collaborative??  (wll outside their class and school)

mrsdurff 1: all will be azrchived carol

JWagner: @nergiz -- I agree -- get right off of Orientation Island

Maryanne Burgos: @Nina yes. Anciana Twine

kelley Irish: ISTE island is a good place to start

carolteach4: such great thoughts, David. Too often in schools, the project is turned in, and that's it. There is no chance to revisit, revise, and improve.

JWagner: DEN is also a good place to begin on SL

Nergiz Kern: Now, you can choose in SL where you want to be "born". There are great alternative orientation islands

kelley Irish: Was in last night an an avatar was having a birthday

Steve Ransom: Those are good points... but not specific to our students. As teachers, we need opportuities to experience the same.

carolteach4: personal investment in a project -we need more of that in the classroom

Steve Ransom: *opportunities

mrsdurff 1: points very specific to our students

derrallg: Infect the social networks?

Steve Ransom: @Durf... I mean not ONLY specific to our students

mrsdurff 1: oh true

Steve Ransom: We can't get kids to do any of this if as teachers we have not experienced the same...

Nergiz Kern: Children ask questions a lot until they start school

Maryanne Burgos: What is the URl for ISTE island?  Are u going to DC conference?

mrsdurff 1: and when presented with a challenge

Nina Liakos: I think that approach would probably work very well offline as well

JWagner: I don't think this slide is just for students -- a lot of teachers should follow these themselves

Nina Liakos: I am guilty of overloading sts with too much information and then I complain when they can't absorb all of it

Steve Ransom: My son's science teacher is trying to make her students responsible... points taken off for not including last name on sheet

Nina Liakos: (some of this driven by learner outcomes)

Nergiz Kern: So sad, Steve

mrsdurff 1: every teacher around me is like that steve

carolteach4: vicki davis and many others use this technique

Berta: Definitely yes!!!

Steve Ransom: @Durff

carolteach4: our 7th grade green team used the google site to write the text for their study of weather

mrsdurff 2: /me works in a vacuum sometimes despite a huge PLN

kelley Irish: My 7th graders made a wiki site on treasure island

JWagner: @Steve 10 to 1 -- that is either something the teacher got in trouble for

mrsdurff 1: i gave a "Durff-final" yesterday - the kids collaborated to find the answer - I smiled 'cause that was a tested objective

Steve Ransom: @JWagner... not as of yet..

mrsdurff 1: we all are

aidenyeh: no audio

Nina Liakos: can

Nina Liakos: t hear

aidenyeh: lol

Michael Coghlan: :0

Nergiz Kern: Steve had a to comment

mrsdurff 2: David do you think that if the SL "learning curve  were perceived not so steep that it might prosper even more for education? Maybe anothe 3Di platform might be already better?

Nina Liakos: I'd like a clarification on making learning and assessment one thing

Berta: wow, Vance!!!

aidenyeh: worst than texting while driving, Vance

Steve Ransom: Wow... so many...

JWagner: think he just dropped out??

derrallg: I'm always struggling to balance individual responsibility and group responsibility when it comes to assessment for collaborative projects

kelley Irish: When students first start to blog it looks like IM speak

Michael Coghlan: this also happens in discussion forums

kelley Irish: After they read each others they begin to correct each other

Moderator (Mike Marzio): Nina - good question - a clarification on making learning and assessment one thing

Nergiz Kern: I'm interested in that, too.

carolteach4: Making student responsible for using formal, standard English - grammatically correct in blog entries is tough but should be required

kelley Irish: I agree Carol teach

mrsdurff 1: i do require

Nina Liakos: Assessment takes up too much time in my classes. I'd prefer to spend more time teaching~learning and less time quizzing~testing

Michael Coghlan: give students a real world problem to solve - if they solve it assessment is the task itself

mrsdurff 1: txt speak ok for IMs & notes only

Nergiz Kern: What is formal, standard English?

Berta: I disagree, Carol

kelley Irish: Next year I am not going to approve and publish until the students have corrected

Steve Ransom: I have a question: Many teachers struggle with considering this kind of learning you describe because it is so foreign to them, both personally and professionally. How do we change this equation?

Moderator (Mike Marzio): Exactly

Congerjan: How do you get them to write?  Word?  So that they can get their grammar right before they cut and paste it into blog?

kelley Irish: I hear all the time-I don't have time I have to get them ready for the state test

Berta: I think there are certain sites where students should write freely without worrying about mistakes and corrections

Nina Liakos: Blogger now has a spell checker, at least.

mrsdurff 1: we do both kelley

teresadeca (Portugal): i agree, berta

Nina Liakos: There's writing for fluency, and there's writing for accuracy

Nina Liakos: Eventually we want to produce writers who are both fluent and accurate

carolteach4: great experience -thanks Vance and all Webheads - glad I got to participate.

mrsdurff 1: nina - i don't separate

Berta: Sure Nina, but they need to have a free "revision" space too

Nina Liakos: Of course

Congerjan: So, you don't use blogs as say a journal where they can just write?

Steve Ransom: Yes... it is a very sad statement to make that one is too busy to learn...

mrsdurff 1: writing is to communicate, therefore one must be master of both

Nina Liakos: I have not found personally that blogging makes students more likely to aim for accuracy! Sadly.

mrsdurff 1: i do

carolteach4: There was a whole Seedlings show on EdTechTalk with a principal and technologist from a Florida school who are following this practice. I'll see if I can find the link.

mrsdurff 1: i invite parents to comment

derrallg: @congerjan I think of blogs within the process writing, journal is like a draft, blog is published/edited

mrsdurff 1: great carol!

Maryanne Burgos: Nina, perhaps the students don't have a wide enough audience.

Congerjan: nice @derallg... so do they have the chance to blog from something in their journal?

Steve Ransom: @Nina... no tool makes students do that. Teachers sometimes have to provide a framework by which work is made "worthy" of publishing.

Sandra McGonagle: an authentic audience is key

derrallg: @congerjan that's the idea choose one journal piece they want to polish

Nina Liakos: Tom Leverett (at SIU) just serves as copy editor for his students. What do you think of that?

Amy Meckelborg: David, how do respond to people like Mark Bullen (http://netgennonsense.blogspot.com/) who question the idea that the net gen distinction is not as clear cut as  popular culture suggests.

Congerjan: @derallg... I like it.

Michael Coghlan: Great session David - v engaging

Congerjan: Thanks Dave.

mrsdurff 2: ScottM says Thanks, Davemn!

Maryanne Burgos: Thanks so much fo sharing!

Berta: If anyone is interested, I will be presenting on Sunday on students´ writing revision perceptions.

Moderator (Mike Marzio): Really good, Dave.

Moderator (Dave Warlick): davidwarlick.com/connectlearning

Steve Ransom: Thanks, all.

Moderator (Dave Warlick): davidwarlick.com/2cents

serpilsonmez: thank you!

kelley Irish: thanks

mrsdurff 1: applause!

Susan van Gelder: thanks so much

derrallg: thank you David

Nergiz Kern: Thanks, Dave! This was intersting and enjoyable

carolteach4: 2009-04-09 Seedlings with Susan Phillips and Melanie Holtsman-this was the Seedlings show  http://www.edtechtalk.com/node/3711

Sandra McGonagle: Thanks, Dave

Berta: I learned A LOT. Thanks Dave and all. Bye

Nergiz Kern: Thanks all for the nice conversation!

teresadeca (Portugal): than k you, david! enjoyed it very much

Nina Liakos: And if you are interested in the topic of balancing your online life with your offline life, come to Tapped In at 20 gmt on Sunday

Nina Liakos: Thank you David!

kelley Irish: Always enjoy listening to you

teresadeca (Portugal): and learned several things

aidenyeh: thanks for the great session

Congerjan: Thanks... loved it!

carolteach4: By David - thanks

mrsdurff 1: adieu!

Nergiz Kern: Bye!

derrallg: bye

mrsdurff 2: thx for the tweet MrsDurff!

Sandra McGonagle: bye
